Learning about the Limousine

The limousine is known as a luxury vehicle in the form of a sedan or saloon car with a lengthened wheelbase. However, there are some versions that have an elongated chassis. These are referred to as the extended limos and are traditionally black or white in colour.

The very first version of limousines was built in 1902 and was designed so that the driver sat behind a covered and separate compartment. Its name is derived from the name of the French region Limousin because the driver's seat physically resembled the cloak hood worn by the shepherds there.

The body style of a limo is characterised by a divider separating the chauffeur from the rear passenger compartment. The said partition usually contains a sliding and often soundproof glass window so that passenger conversation can remain private. Communication is between the driver and passengers is possible by opening the window or using an intercom system.

Limousines are usually utilised as liveried vehicles, which explains the reason for them having a specifically assigned driver. Due to the fact that they are among the most expensive forms of ground transportation, these cars tend to be culturally associated with extreme wealth and power. However, the more common client may have access to the vehicle through rental companies. These firms mostly cater to special events such as funerals and weddings.

While some units are owned by private individuals, many belong to governments for transporting senior politicians. In addition, some multinational firms also own them to be used by its major executives. Apart from the luxury that it is equipped with, limousines also come with security features like an armoured body and bullet-proof glass windows.
